Temporary exhibition "Palacio Real de Tordesillas" ("Royal Palace of Tordesillas")

Joan I of Castile lived at the palace in Tordesillas for 46 years. This palace does not exist nowadays. After her death, this building was abandoned and the last remains were demolished in the 18th century. New buildings were built on the site of the old palace and the urban landscape changed completely.

After the palace was demolished, all traces of its history vanished too. Word of mouth descriptions of its original situation were not correct in locating it within St. Antonlin church. In addition, many historians confused it and the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, which was also a palace originally.

This important project was directed by the tourism department of the town council, in collaboration with the historian Miguel Ángel Zalama and the architect Roberto Rueda. The aim was to recover the historical memory of the palace. The costs involved were covered by a grant from the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Junta de Castilla y León.

The project consisted of a detailed study of the palace and the construction of its scale replica model made at a scale 1:40. At present, the replica is shown in the permanent model exhibition “Great Miniatures” at Treaty Houses in Tordesillas. The study was adapted to be displayed in the Temporary Exhibition “Palacio Real de Tordesillas” (“Royal Palace of Tordesillas”), from 31 october to 17 November at the Treaty Houses exhibition room.
