The valley formed by the river constitutes the environmental unit called "Vega de Duero" (fertile lowland of the Duero river). From an agricultural point of view, it is possible to have both dry land and irrigation cultivations, what make it more important. In summer time, the typical landscapes of castilian moors appear where the main colour is yellow. The fact that there are good quality lands and what is more, the large quantity of water, that is supplied by the river Duero, thanks to a good irrigation infrastructure makes it possible that Tordesillas was the seat of an agricultural region. The primary sector makes 15%, this number rises when we go into the towns of the region.

There are large channels and irrigation ditches that water the zone. The main cultivations are sugar beets, potatoes and corn, lately, since it is high production cultivation.

It is quite common the intensive cultivation of vegetable gardens in Tordesillas. In fact, there is a great number of greenhouses, what is due to its proximity to Valladolid, to which the village supplies. Small family markets can be seen in the nearest surroundings. Its purpose is to supply its owners with fresh vegetables in summer time.

It cannot be forgotten the fact that the river Duero creates a special microclimate. Another important point is the kind of land, light lands, a bit calcareous. Both of them are decisive factors to produce superb quality wines. There is only a small winery (wine cellar and shop also) in Tordesillas that produce wine in a traditional way. However, one of the most important guarantees of origin in Castile and Leon, Rueda, is less than 10 km. far from Tordesillas. It has achieved very good fame because of its white wines. "Verdejo" is the most important variety although superb quality red wines are produced also.
