Cereal steppe

The typical landscape of cereal steppe is dominated by dry land cultivations such as barley, wheat, oats and sunflower... which are the commonest ones of this area. In addition to this kind of vegetation, there is another one that grows near boundaries, gutters and fallow lands in a spontaneous way. The mustard yellow flowers mix with the red poppies.

The large number of seeds, both wild and from cultivations make possible that a great number of vertebrates have at its disposal lage quantities of food.

Small mammals live in this habitat. Mainly, rodents such as mouses, shrews or peasant small moles whose population grows in a cyclical way. That fact causes authentic plagues that damage agricultural cultivations of lands seriously. Undoubtedly, the most representative mammal of Castilian steppes is the Iberian hare that adapts its biological cycle to typical agricultural farm works of those cultivations. Some predators such as the fox appear on the next stage of food chain.

The buzzard is without question the queen of cereal steppe. It is the heaviest flying bird of the world. That species adapted perfectly to cereal lands where it feeds and reproduces. They are gregarious birds. Normally, that's why we find them constituting more or less numerous groups. Partridges and quails are also typical on this area; they enliven lands when they sing. We also find swallows, swifts pigeons and storks coexisting with us.
